Sunday’s Obituary – Edward Warren Shackford, of Eastport, Maine, Weymouth, Massachusetts, and Belfast, Maine (1846-1921) (Blog 486)

Obituary Edward W Shackford The Republican journal. [volume], November 17, 1921Edward W. Shackford died at his home
at the corner of High and Peach streets
last Sunday night at the age of 75 years.
He came to Belfast about four years ago
from East Weymouth, Mass., when his
health failed and he was obliged to give
up his occupation as a house painter. At
that time he had a shock but was able to
be about as usual until two months ago
he had a severe one from which he never
rallied and failed gradually until the end
In all this time he had the unremitting
care of his devoted wife. During his
residence he had made many friends, par-
ticularly among the Odd Fellows, as for
over fifty years he had been a member of
Crescent Lodge, I. O. O. F., of East
Weymouth. Waldo Lodge members have
been attentive to him in his illness. His
widow and one son, Charles L. Shack-
ford of Brookline, Mass., survive him.
Their only daughter, Mrs. A. D. Brewer
of Stockton Springs, died here last sum-
mer. His son and wife arrived here last
Saturday and remained until after the
funeral which took place at his late home
Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock under the
auspices of Waldo Lodge with Rev. N. F.
Atwood of Searsport officiating. His
remains will be taken to East Weymouth
for interment next Friday.

Edward Warren Shackford, the son of Charles William Shackford and Sophia Roberts was born on May 25, 1846 in Eastport, Maine.  He moved into his grandfather’s home when he was seven after his father, master of the Brig Esther Elizabeth was reported lost at sea. Edward then worked in the dry goods business, and eventually became a house painter.

On January 12, 1871 Edward married Georgianna Lee in East Weymouth, Massachusetts.  The marriage was reported in the Ellsworth American.  Edward continued to work as a housepainter in the Boston area while he and his wife raised two children.  As his obituary stated, in 1917 he moved to Belfast, Maine after an illness.  He made many friends in Belfast where he became involved in the Walden Lodge Odd Fellows.  Unfortunately Edward died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Belfast on November 13, 1921 four years after his move. His body was returned to Massachusetts and he was buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Albert F Shackford (1846-1927), Town Clerk of Barnstead, Population 1317 — Had Many Jobs – Justice, Mail Contractor, Farmer, and Shoe Fitter (Blog 485)

Before 1830, Josiah Ring Shackford moved from Newmarket, New Hampshire to Barnstead where he farmed and raised a large family.  His first son, Samuel Garland Shackford remained in Barnstead where he married Mary Bean Foss and raised five children, the eldest of whom was Albert F Shackford, who was born on July 25, 1846.  Albert was 12 when his mother died and in 1861 when he was 15, he and his siblings went to live with the Huse family while his father served in the Civil War until 1865.

Marriage Record Albert F Shackford Part 1 FamilySearchOn April 25, 1872, Albert who was working as a shoemaker married Helena Augusta Huntress, the widow of John R Jenkins and mother of Charles W. Jenkins.

After his marriage, Albert served as Barnstead town clerk, as a state justice, ran a country store, and was the mail contractor for Barnstead.  After his wife’s death in 1889, Albert moved into his step son’s home and worked as a stock fitter in a shoe shop. By 1910 he owned his own farm and continued working in the shoe business.  Albert died at the age of 81 on December 5, 1927 of cardiac vascular disease.  He was buried in Barnstead.

CHILDREN:

Charles W Jenkins (1869-1945) [step-son from wife’s first marriage], shoe business, married Liller D. Foss.

Eugene Frank Shackford (1873-1941) – moved to Lynn and worked in the shoe business.

Harry Albert Shackford (1875-1928) – lived in Barnstead and worked in the dry goods business.

Note:  Alfred’s middle name is sometimes found listed as Foss or Frank but have not found any primary sources that spell out a middle name.  He did write to Samuel Burnham Shackford regarding family genealogy and Samuel spelled it out as Frank — hoping someday to see these letters & then may spell out his middle name.

Captain William Shackford (1783-1870), Commanded the Active, Sally, Orient, Blockade, Five Brothers, Lady Sherbrook, Sarah, and the Splendid (Blog 484)

The chapter titled Captain John Shackford and Family in Eastport and Passamaquoddy: A Collection of Historical and Background Sketches was written by William Shackford’s nephew, Samuel Shackford of ChicagoA part of this chapter describes the life of William Shackford (1783-1870).

William, the second son of John and Esther, born at
Newbury Nov. 23, 1783, was a seaman from early boy-
hood. He commanded the “Active” in 1807, afterward the
“Sally,”, “Orient,” “Blockade,” “Five Brothers,” and was
engaged principally in the West India trade. He com-
manded the brig “Dawn,” which was taken by a French
cruiser during the wars of Napoleon I. and taken into France.
On being released, he crossed over to England, and from
there worked his passage home as a sailor before the mast.
He then commanded the “Lady Sherbrook” and the “Sarah.”
His last vessel was the “Splendid,” a fine vessel, built espe-
cially for the passenger trade between Eastport and Boston.
About 1822, at the age of fifty, he retired from the sea, and
engaged with his brother Jacob and the Hon. Lorenzo
Sabine in mercantile pursuits. He died in 1870, aged eighty-
seven, leaving, by his second wife, Mary, daughter of Cap-
tain Jacob Lincoln, sons,- John William, who for many
years commanded the steam packet-ship “Illinois” and
other ocean steamships, and is now master of Jay Gould’s
famous steam yacht “Atalanta”; Captain Edward Wallace, a
successful ship-master; and Ebed Lincoln, who, after serving
in the Union Army during the Rebellion, settled at St. Paul,
Minn., where he is now, a thrifty merchant.

This document doesn’t list William’s first wife whose Sept 2, 1836 or 1837 death was reported in Kenneth Wiley’s Vital Records from the Eastport Sentinel of Eastport, Maine 1818-1900.  She was buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Eastport, Maine.
