Franklin P. Shackford is one of the
13 heirs to the property of his uncle,
Dr. Rufus Shackford, of Portland, Me.
Mrs George Currier and sister are
two of the other heirs living in Chester.
Dr Rufus F Shackford was born December 17, 1816 in Chester, New Hampshire to Samuel and Harriet (Currier) Shackford. He married twice – Louisa Cummings and Mary Ann Bateman, both of whom who died before Rufus. He died at the age of 85 on September 24, 1902. Based on the above newspaper article, we believe the probate occurred four years after his death in 1906. We can’t find copy of his probate records online at this time as these years are not yet available digitally.
We believe that George Currier mentioned in the article was the son of Rufus’s sister Abigail and John Currier but are not sure which sister is referred in the article. Here’s a list of the other possible heirs:

Franklin Pierce Shackford, the eldest son of Jonathan and Harriet N (Farnham) Shackford was born on June 1, 1854 in Chester, New Hampshire. We find him with his parents in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses where his father worked as a farmer and Frank began working in the shoe business. He married Helen A Lewis in Portsmouth on Dec 14, 1887. By 1900, Franklin was working as a mason. He also became a selectman of Chester and the overseer of the poor. In 1906 he and his siblings were recipients of the will of his uncle Rufus and moved from Chester to Derry. Being the recipient of a will might be why Franklin wrote his own will four years later.
By 1920 Franklin was still in Derry working in the shoe business again. He died on July 5, 1926 at the age of 72, 16 months after the death of his wife. We learn a lot more about Franklin who also went by F. P. from his obituary which was published in The Derry News on July 9, 1926.

Franklin F. P. Shackford of 7
Everett street, passed away in Man-
chester, at the Lucy Hastings hospital
at an early hour Tuesday morning. He
went to the hospital some two or three
weeks ago for an operation for hernia
and passed the illness in find shape and
was s nearly recovered that he was
planning soon to come home. The shock
came very suddenly and unexpected. The
body was brought to the home here
Tuesday forenoon by undertaker Homer
A. White.
Mr. Shackford was born in Chester,
January 1, 1854, and was a stone mason
and bricklayer bytrade. He came from
Chester to Derry some 20 years ago. He
was a member of the O. U. A. M. And
while in in Chester was eleted to the of-
fice of selectmen. He was a very in-
dustrious and reliable man, and had
many friends. His wife passed away
a few years ago.
Mr Shackford is survived by one
daughter, Mrs. Benj. S. Hoisington of
this town, and a son I. Lewis Shack-
ford of Boston, also four grandchil-
dren, Richard, Barbara, Robert and
Eleanor.
The funeral services were held at
the home Tuesday afternoon at 3
p’clock and were conducted by the
Rev. I. J. Enslin, pastor of the Bap-
tist church. The singing was by Mrs.
Alice C. Kingsbury. There were
many very beautiful flowers from
relatives and friends. the interment
was in the family lot in Forest Hill
cemetery by undertakers H. A. White
& Son. Burnside Council J. O. U.
A. M. held their services at the grave.

Helen A Lewis, the daughter of John E and Helen Lewis, was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Feb 10, 1860. Her mother died shortly after her birth as we find her in the 1860 census in Portsmouth five months after her birth with her father and three siblings all under the age of 9.
By 1870 the family had moved to Kittery where Helen was listed as Nellie in the census and in 1880 she was contributing to the family income by working as a domestic servant.
Helen was 27 when she married Franklin Pierce Shackford on Dec 14, 1887 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. had settled in Chester where she had two children. In 1900 they were in Chester where Franklin was working as a mason and Helen was working as a dressmaker. By 1910 they had moved to Derry New Hampshire where Franklin was farming. They moved to Lawrence in 1912 but by 1920 were back in Derry.
Helen died on March 12, 1925 of influenza and was buried on March 15, 1935 in Forest Hill Cemetery in Derry. Her husband Franklin died less than a year later. We are grateful to have found her obituary as it provides more details of her life and reiterates that she was a kind, loving, and thoughtful woman who was of exemplary character.

MRS HELEN A SHACKFORD
The funeral of Mrs. Helen A. Shack
ford who died Thursday March 13,
1925 was held from the home of
Everett St, Derry, Sunday afternoon,
March 16, at 300 o’clock.
Mrs. Shackford, the daughter of
John A and Helen A. Lewis was
born in Portsmouth Feb 11, 1861.
After three years the family moved to
Kittery, Maine where her child
hood days were passed.
She was married Dec. 14, 1887 to
Frank P. Shackford of Chester, where
they made their home, living there un
til 1907, when they moved to Derry.
While residing in Chester, Mrs
Shackford became a member of the
Baptist church and all during the fol-
lowing years was an active religious
worker. She was also a member of
the Bell W R C of Chester, holding
from time to time every office in that
organization.
Through her kindness and loving
thoughtfulness she gained a large
number of lifelong friends. After
taking up her residence in Derry she
became a member of the Derry grange
and the West Rockingham Pomona.
Besides her husband Frank P. Shack-
ford she leaves a sister, Mrs. Laura
E Lotham, of Boston, a brother
Charles E Lewis of Stoughton, Mass,
a daughter Mrs B S Hoisington, of
Derry, a son I. Lewis Shackford of
Somerville, also four grandchildren,
Richard Lewis, Barbara May, Robert
Irwin and Eleanor Gertrude Shack
ford.
Rev Irving J Enalin of the Bap-
tist church officiated at the funeral.
????? and appropriate ritual
ace service of the Bell W. R. C. was
performed by the officers of that or-
ganization “Served by grace” and
“Nearer My God to Thee” were ren-
dered by Mrs Alice C. Kingsbury.
The bearers were William T. Morse,
Clifton H McAlmon. A Burnaide
Pillsbury and Allie Parshley and in-
ternent was in Forest Hill cemetery
by Undertaker Homer A White and
Son.
Mrs Shackford was a woman of
exemplary character a devoted wife
and other and true Christian.
Among the beautiful floral tributes
which attested high esteem in
which she was held by all, were
noted the following. Pillow, mixed

Elsie M Shackford the daughter of Franklin Pierce and Helen (Lewis) Shackford was born September 8, 1888 in Chester, New Hampshire. We find her listed in the 1900 census in Chester and listed in the honor roll records when she was 15. Elsie then attended Colby Academy. She’s listed as teaching school at the age of 21 in the 1910 census, moving in 1912 with her family to Lawrence, Massachusetts, returning to Derry by 1916 when she worked as a bookkeeper for the W. B. S. company, and as the bookkeeper for a shoe factory in the 1920 census.
Elsie and Benjamin probably met at work as they were employed at the same shoe factory. They filed their intention to marry on Jan 15th and were married on January 23rd which was reported in this detailed article in The Derry News on February 2nd, 1923.

On Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock
a pretty home wedding was solem-
ized at the residence of Mr. and Mrs.
Frank P. Shackford, 7 Everett street,
when their only daughter Miss Elsie
M. Shackford and Benjamin S. Hois-
ington were united in mar-
riage by the Rev. J. H. Nichols of this
town. The double ring service was
used. The bride was given away by
her father. The matron of honor was
Mrs. Wilber Woodbridge of Laenie,
who was a classmate of the bride at
Colby academy The best man was
Walter A. Hoisington a brother of the
groom. Miss Doris Gatermulk of Dor-
chester, a cousin of the bride played
the wedding march from Lobagrin.
The bride and groom were under a
large floral bell, the decorations of the
room being in green and white, and
the decorations of the dining-room
of yellow and white. Streamers of
theme colors, potted plants and eve
flowers made a very attractive appear-
ance.
The ushers were Louis Shackford of
Somerville, Mass, the brother of the
bride, and Wilber M. Woodbridge, of
Laconia. Only immediate relatives
and friends witnessed the ceremony.
The bride’s dress was of brown chif-
fon velvet, with a hat of brown and
gold to match and she carried a bridal
bouquet of white roses, sweet peas and
lilies of the valley.
The groom’s gift to the bride was a
beautiful bar pin, set with sapphires
and diamonds and the bride’s gift to
the matron of honor was a pair of ear-
drops set in platinum. The bride gave
to Miss Gutermuth a rich Paisley
shawl, and the groom’s gift to the best
man and ushers was solid gold cuff
links. Mr. and Mrs Hoisington re-
ceived many very valuable and useful
wedding present.
The bride had been the bookkeeper
in the W. M. Taply shoe factory the
past two years and the groom is as-
sistant superintendent there. He is
also a member of the Men’s club, of
the fire department and of the D. A. A.
having been manager of the baseball
team the past year.
Mr. and Mrs. Hoisington left on the
5 o’clock train for Boston and New
York. They will return to make their
home in Derry.
Elsie’s husband Benjamin worked in the shoe business as a cutter, foreman of the factory and then proprietor of a newsstand while Elsie worked as a stitcher, then bookkeeper of a shoe factory.
While Benjamin had four children from his previous marriages, we don’t believe he and Elsie had any children together. Benjamin and Elsie remained at 7 Everett Street in Deery but may have traveled to Ponoma City, California for a bit in 1956. Benjamin died in April 1969 at the age of 86 and Elsie died in December 1973 at the age of 85. They are both buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry.

We found this announcement in the Derry newspaper announcing that Franklin P Shackford had been appointed as the Administrator of his father’s estate:
The Derry News, 6 Sep 1895
The subscriber gives action that he has
been duly appointed Administrator of the
estate of
JONATHAN SHACKFORD, late of Chester,
in the county of Rockingham, deceased.
All persons indebted to said estate are requested
to make payment, and all having claims to present
them for adjustment.

This led us hunt in the the New Hampshire County Probate records where we found that Jonathan had not left a will and that his wife Harriet (Farnum) had asked the court to approve Jonathan’s son Franklin as the administrator – this document also showed that Franklin, his mother, and his sister had posted a $2,000 bond.
Further research led us to the Docket documents showing that Jonathan’s real estate was valued at $1986 and his personal property was valued at $178.45.

We’re pretty certain that Harriet Farnum Shackford was the daughter of John and Olive Farnum and that she was born in Manchester, NH on Oct 20, 1823. Our only hesitation was finding her obituary listing her maiden name as Varnum but we believe this is a typo. We believe we’ve found her in the Chester census in 1850 at age 28 living with parents John and Olive and 12 year old Elisabeth Vinson but know little of her heritage.
Our only source of Harriet’s marriage is John Carroll Chase’s book History of Chester New Hampshire Including Auburn A Supplement to the History of Old Chester Published in 1869 which states that Jonathan Shackford married in 1853 Harriet N Farnham. We then find her and Jonathan and their children in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census. She probably had a tough life as the wife of a farmer in Chester, NH in the mid 1850 – 1880s but it may have been eased by her husband’s inheritance of the family homestead farm along with other neighboring property.
Harriet’s husband Jonathan died on August 4, 1895 in Chester and she followed her son-in-law George Symmes and her daughter Olive A to Canada where we find the family in 1901. Olive died in Quebec in 1903 and Harriet returned to Kingston, New Hampshire where she died on January 3, 1904. The cause of death was listed as senile, fall & injury to the neck.
Her obituary is shown below – we think it has a few typing errors – her maiden name is listed as Varnum and her son-in-law’s last name is misspelled Simms.

Harriet (Varnum) Shackford, widow of
the late Jonathan Shackford, died Sunday at
the home of her son-in-law, George Simms in
Kingston, at the age of 81 years and 3 months.
Her remains were brought here Tuesday and
placed in the receiving tomb to await internment
in the Village cemetery. After the death of
her husband several years ago she went to
Canada to live with her daughter Mrs Olive
Simms, and since her death about one year
ago has made her home with her son-in-law in
Kingston. Of her immediate family she is
survived by one son, Franklin P. Shackford.
Harriet’s will which was dated Dec 12, 1903 left $1.00 to her son Franklin Pierce Shackford and the remainder to her son-in-law, George W Symmes. Based on Harriet’s cause of death which was listed as senile, we wonder if the will was contested.

Samuel Q Shackford (1855-1868) – died at the young age of 8, buried in Chester, NH

Olive A Shackford (1859-1903) – married George W Symmes of Canada, lived in Manchester, then Canada where she died of valvular heart disease at the age of 43

Irwin Lewis Shackford, the son of Franklin Pierce and Helen A (Lewis) Shackford was born October 26, 1892 in Chester, New Hampshire. We find him in the 1900 and 1910 census in Chester and then Derry with his parents and elder sister Elsie M Shackford
Our next record of Irwin is of his November 26, 1913 marriage to Annette Mabel Parsons in Dedham, Massachusetts where her parents Frank B and Alice (Bird) Parsons lived. We are grateful to have found this wonderful newspaper article which was published in The Derry News on December 5, describing their wedding:

Parson-Shackford
A very pretty wedding took place
Wednesday evening November 26, at the
Protestant Episcopal church, Dedham,
Mass., when Miss Annette Mable Parsons
was married to Irwin Lewis Shackford of
Derry in the presence of the immediate
relatives of the contracting parties. The
officiating minister was the Rev. William
F. Cheney, pastor of the church.
The bride wore a becoming gown of
white silk crepe de eline over white satin
with pearl trimmings and a bridal veil
caught up with orange blossoms and she
carried bridal roses.
Her traveling dress was a blue broad-
cloth The bride and groom was attend-
ded by Miss Margaret Crawford and Wal-
ter Chase, friends of the couple. After
the ceremony a reception was held at the
home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs Frank Parsons, Adams St., Dedham,
where congratulations were received from
hosts of friends, after which a daint
lunch was served.
The wedding cake was cut by the bride
and served by Miss Cummings.
The gifts consisted of silver, glass and
china and other useful articles, including
a brass bed from the parents and sister of
the groom. The ushers were Fred Par-
sons, brother of the bride and Fred Gut-
ermath, cousin of the groom. The couple
boarded an auto amid showers of rice and
confetti. A large card on the back of the
auto caused a great deal of merriment as
they departed.
Mr and Mrs Shackford will reside in
Dorchester, Mass, with the good wishes
of their many friends.
Irwin registered for the draft in 1917 stating he was working as a Trade Shipper for Haskell Adams, had a wife and child, was of medium height, had brown hair, brown eyes and was not disabled. We do not believe he was called to the military and by 1920 he was living in at 20 Beacon Place in Somerville working as a creamery foreman. In 1930 he was working as a retail truck driver and his wife Annette was working as a cashier in a department store. By 1937 they were living at 115 Kinnard in Cambridge and he was still working in Dorchester.
The family moved back to Derry by 1940 and Irwin found employment as a truck driver. His World War II draft registration card tells us that the family was living at 15 Chester Road and his employer wa McKinney’s Dairy in Derry Village.
Irwin died September 1964. His wife Annette died around September 23, 1971 and was buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Forest Hill.

Richard Lewis Shackford (1914-1974) – married Lillian Mary Astramowicz in England. Served in WWII, worked as a nurse.
Barbara May Shackford (1917-1999) – married Albin Walfred Carlson and Glendon Joseph Kelley. Lived in Somerville and New Hampshire
Robert Irwin Shackford (1919-1984) – married Josephine Scott and Nancy Nicholl, service in the military WWII. Lived in Somerville and Chicago
Eleanor Gertrude Shackford (1921-1991) – married Arthur Joseph Riley. Lived in Somerville and Atlanta, Georgia
Roland Franklin Shackford (1930-2001) – served in Korea, married Nancy Ann Smith, lived in Somerville, Derry, Lynn, and Acton, Massachusetts.

Franklin Pierce Shackford, the son of Jonathan and Harriett N. (Farnham) Shackford was born June 1, 1854 in Chester, New Hampshire and lived with his parents in Chester until at least 1880 when he was “working on shoes”.
When he was 33, Franklin married Helen A Lewis, the daughter of John E and Helen A (Stevens) Lewis on Dec 14, 1887 in Portsmouth, Maine and returned to Chester where he worked as a mason and served as a selectman. His wife worked as a dressmaker and raised their two children. Sometime before 1910 they moved to Derry where Franklin worked as a mason, farmer, and shoe maker. Franklin died in Manchester at the age of 72 on July 5, 1926 of a cerebral hemorrhage after being a patient in the Lucy Hasting Hospital for about four weeks and was buried at the Forest Hill Cemetery in East Derry.
Franklin had written his will in 1910 designating his beloved wife as administrator but unfortunately she had died on March 12, 1925. We have not yet found who assumed that responsibility but know that he also left $500 to his two children Elsie M Shackford who had married Benjamin Shubel Hoisington in 1923 and Irwin Lewis Shackford who had married Annette Mabel Parsons in 1913.

Will Franklin P Shackford Derry
Be it Remembered that I Franklin P Shackford of Derry, in the County of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and perfect memory, do make and publish this as my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills heretofore by me made in the manner following
First After the payment of my just debts and funeral expenses by my executor, hereinafter named, I give and bequeath to my daughter Elsie M Shackford the sum of five hundred dollars
Second I give and bequeath to my son, Irwin L Shackford the sum of five hundred dollars
Third I give, bequeath and devise all the rest and residue of my estate, both real and personal of every description and where ever found to my beloved wife Helen A Shackford to her own and behalf forever.
Fourth I do hereby appoint my said wife sole
executor of this my last will and testament to
furnish a surety as sureties on her bond as
such executrix.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my
hand and seal this sixteenth day of February 1910.
