Wedding Wednesday – Hazel Shackford of New Hampshire married George F Bohannan in California June 1, 1921 (Blog 400)

Hazel Shackford was sure adventurous!  Sometime before the age of 24 she moved from Conway, New Hampshire to California where she is mentioned in a 1913 newspaper article as assisting the hostesses of an affair at the Ebell Clubhouse hosted by a Mrs Andrew James Copp.  Then in 1916 we find Hazel listed in the Glendale California Voter Registrations – she’s a student living at 406 W Third St.  In 1917 she’s in the same residence working as a secretary working for Dr Hurtt.

Hazel was born September 1889 in Conway, New Hampshire to Jesse Fred and Edith (Beecham) Shackford.  She is listed in the 1900 census twice, once with her parents and brother Charles in Conway on June 12th and with her grandparents in Eaton on June 19th.  She’s also listed with her family in the Conway 1905 Register and in the 1910 census in Conway.  In October 1911 she left Boston for California with a friend to visit an aunt and remained there.  By the 1920 census she is recorded in Glendale California as a secretary for a real estate firm.

Hazel’s marriage license and Certificate of Marriage told us the name of her husband (George F Bohannan), his birthplace (Michigan), his parents (Willis George and Agnes J Wilkenson), his occupation (a printer).  It stated that Hazel was 29 but based on previous census records, we believe she was 32.

We suspect that George and Hazel divorced shortly after having a daughter Ruth born about 1923.  We find Hazel and Ruth living  together in the 1930 and 1940 censuses and George living with Gladys in San Francisco.

Hazel died in Los Angeles on July 23, 1961.  Her obituary was published in The Reporter:
