Wedding Wednesday – Hazel Shackford of New Hampshire married George F Bohannan in California June 1, 1921 (Blog 400)

Hazel Shackford was sure adventurous!  Sometime before the age of 24 she moved from Conway, New Hampshire to California where she is mentioned in a 1913 newspaper article as assisting the hostesses of an affair at the Ebell Clubhouse hosted by a Mrs Andrew James Copp.  Then in 1916 we find Hazel listed in the Glendale California Voter Registrations – she’s a student living at 406 W Third St.  In 1917 she’s in the same residence working as a secretary working for Dr Hurtt.

We’re not sure what brought Hazel to California — she was born about 1888 in Conway, New Hampshire to Jesse Fred and Edith Beacham Shackford.  We find her in the 1900 census twice, once with her parents and brother Charles in Conway on June 12th and with her grandparents in Eaton on June 19th.  She’s also listed with her family in the Conway 1905 Register and in the 1910 census in Conway.  By the 1920 census she is recorded in Glendale California as a secretary for a real estate firm.

Hazel’s marriage license and Certificate of Marriage told us the name of her husband (George F Bohannan), his birthplace (Michigan), his parents (Willis George and Agnes J Wilkenson), his occupation (a printer).  It stated that Hazel was 29 but based on previous census records, we believe she was 32.

We suspect that George and Hazel divorced shortly after having a daughter Ruth born about 1923.  We find Hazel and Ruth living  together in the 1930 and 1940 censuses and George living with Gladys in San Francisco.

Hazel died in Los Angeles on July 23, 1961.  We hope she met her dreams by moving to California at such a young age!

Military Monday – Charles Beacham Shackford, Pvt, WWI, 151st Dep Brigade (Blog 399)

Charles Beacham Shackford, the son of Jesse Fred and Edith M (Beacham) Shackford was born May 22, 1892 in Eaton, New Hampshire. His father was employed as a grain dealer at the time of his birth.  We find Charles and his sister Hazel in two 1900 censuses – once on June 12th in Conway with their parents Fred J and Edith M and a week later on June 19th in Eaton, New Hampshire with their grandparents Caleb and Lydia A (Hamilton) Shackford.  In 1910 we find the family in Carroll, New Hampshire.  Charles was 17, his father was running the general store and the children’s grandmother Belinda A (Stillings) Beacham was living with the family.

On June 5, 1917 Charles completed his draft registration card stating he was 25 years old, a farmer, and had no dependents.  The card shows that he was of medium height, medium build, had dark eyes, black hair, and had no disabilities.  We have no record of his military service other than an application for his headstone stating he served as a private with the 151 Depot Brigade.  The brigade was at Fort Devens in Ayer Massachusetts and was created September 15, 1917 to receive soldiers and prepare them for deployment.  According to Charles headstone application, he enlisted on May 15, 1918 and was discharged honorably on Dec 5, 1918.

After his discharge we find Charles in 1920 living in Eaton with his grandmother Lydia, a widow and working as an auto driver.  On January 31, 1929 he married Mildred Beatrice Leavitt who had previously married and divorced a Mr Doherty.  In 1930 we find Charles in Sandwich, New Hampshire working as a carpenter and believe we find Mildred in the 1930 census in Manhattan working as a private secretary in a textile company.  They were divorced on July 2, 1932 – the cause states abandonment and refusal to cohabit.

Charles died of pneumonia and myocarditis on November 30, 1939 in Sandwich where he was still working as a carpenter.  He was buried in the Eaton Cemetery. We know of Charles’ military service because of this application for a headstone and a photo of his gravestone which can be found at FindAGrave.
