Tombstone Tuesday – Elizabeth (Wells) Shackford, wife of Joseph Greenleaf Shackford (Blog 388)

Elizabeth Wells who went by Betsey was born about July 9, 1796 (calculated off the dates on her gravestone) to the Wells family who we believe lived in Newburyport. We’re pretty certain she had an older sister named Joanna who was born about 1791 but are not certain who their parents were.

Elizabeth married Joseph Greenleaf Shackford, the son of Levi and Tamizen (Greenleaf) Shackford in Boston – the marriage was formally announced on March 20, 1825, and they were married by Rev James Saine on May 5, 1825. Elizabeth’s sister Joanna Wells married Aaron Robinson in Newburyport and they moved to Gilford, New Hampshire.

We find Joseph working as a laborer in Norfolk in 1929, living at the rear of 415 Washington in 1831.  In 1836 we find him working as a sign painter and living at 29 Boylston Street with a William B Shackford, either his brother or his nephew William Brown Shackford.

The 1840 census shows two individuals in Joseph’s residence which is now in Newburyport – we assume the second person is his wife Elizabeth.  The couple is still in Newburyport in 1850.  Joseph’s occupation is showing as mariner in the 1855 census but is listed as laborer in the 1860 census.

Joseph,  died in Newburyport on March 25, 1863 of dropsy at the age of 64.  His death record lists his occupation as a mariner.  He was buried in the First Parish Burying Ground in Newburyport.  His wife Betsy lived at 13 School Street in Newburyport and was living with a Mary Pike in 1870. By 1880 Elizabeth moved to Gilford and was living with her niece Marietta Gilman, the daughter of Joanna Wells.  Elizabeth on Aug 11, 1886 – while the death is registered in Newburyport, a review of the register shows the death occurred in Gilford.  She was buried near her husband in the First Parish Burying Ground.  Her tombstone reads
