Sunday’s Obituary – William Bell Shackford of 71 Prentiss Street (1860-1922) (Blog 431)

William Bell Shackford, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Grace Grizzela (Watson) Shackford was born on December 6 1860 in Boston, Massachusetts.  He was living with both parents in Chealsea in 1870 but lost his father in 1879.  In June of 1880 he was 19 and was the oldest of five siblings living with his 39 year old widowed mother.  He and his 14 year old brother Fred were both working to support the family.  William must have started before this time working for the regional grocery store chain Cobb, Bates, Yerxa Company where his father had worked and where he spent his entire career as a driver and clerk.

On March 9, 1884, William married Mary Eliza Howe and had a daughter, Lizzie May Shackford born on August 3, 1884.  The relationship didn’t last long as William published a notice in the Boston Daily Globe on October 20, 1885 stating the he would no longer would not pay any bill contracted by his wife from Oct 17 forward.  Also both Mary and her daughter Lizzie were living with Mary’s father William T Howe in June when the 1900 census was taken so perhaps they separated or divorced – she is listed as widowed in the census but William was still living and in the same job.   Mary who had been working as a nurse died on Feb 8, 1907 following complications from a hysterectomy.

We find William at age 40 in the 1900 census at 101 Lincoln Street with two year old son Harry and a wife who is listed as Mary B but has a birth date that matches his second wife Hannah.  The census also says it was his first marriage at age 19 which does not match either spouse. At the age of 46, William was driving his horse drawn carriage for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa when he collided with a car knocking the grocery wagon down and causing considerable damage to the horse and wagon. Fortunately, William was not injured.

We find William and Hannah in the 1910 and 1920 census at 71 Prentiss Street in Chelsea with children Harry and Louise.  He was working as a clerk and driver of the grocery wagon.

William died at age 61 on July 1922.   His obituary was published in the Cambridge Chronicle on 12 Aug 1922 and a notice was also published in the Boston Globe on Aug 1, 1922.  Interestingly there is no mention of his first daughter Lizzie who was still living.  William’s wife Hannah who was still living at 91 Prentiss died on April 1, 1932.

Wedding Wednesday – James Murray Shackford marries Mrs Binie Hatch-Wincup in Chicago in 1898 (Blog 430)

James Murray Shackford, the son of John Edward and Mary Astern (Harris) Shackford was born on February 18, 1853 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  We find James’ father in St Louis in 1850 working as a clerk and in Toledo Ohio in 1853 which is where his mother died in Aug 1854 when James was only 18 months.  After his mother’s death, James and his brother Charles Albert were brought up by their great aunt Sarah and her daughter Mary Jane in Berwick where they attended the Berwick Academy.  In 1870 when he was 17, James lived with the William Henry family where he was a locomotive apprentice and in the home of Samuel Kingsbury where he was a machinist apprentice.  He then attended Cornell where he obtained a degree as a mechanical engineer and became a member of the fraternity Chi Phi.  James’ father remained in the St Louis area where he married someone from that area and had two children.

On April 3, 1877, James married Mary C Farrell in Galesburg Illinois and the family moved to St Paul, Minnesota where James worked as a draftsman.  They returned to Illinois where their son Daniel Robert Shackford was born in 1882.  Sadly Mary died on Aug 5, 1894 at the age of 37.

In February 1897, James was accepted into the Illinois Society of the Sons of the American Revolution based on research he provided regarding his mother’s family line of Harris back to Wentworth Hunking, Chairman of Portsmouth Committee of Safety.  We don’t find any documentation of a submission based on his ancestor Paul Shackford (1702-1786) although other descendents of Paul used that lineage as the basis of their submissions.

On March 10, 1898, James married Binie Hatch Wincup, the widow of Charles Wincup who had died in April 1890.

Tuesday Tips – Searching for Shackfords in Newspapers (Blog 429)

Newspaper articles about Shackfords re precious because the describe details of their lives, mention family members, include obituaries and often tell us facts that aren’t available in vital documents, census records, or other formal documents.  It isn’t always easy to find articles but as Ken Marks explains in his recent blog about finding more ancestors in newspapers using OCR scanning, alternative spellings can help us find more articles of the people we are searching.  Here’s the results showing new articles found using his methodology as we search for variations of the spelling of Shackford in Chronicling America.

VARIATIONS OF SHACKFORD Results  in Chronicling America
Shackford 2949 Shackfords
Sbackford 316 Shackfords

We’ve verifies that Ken Mark’s spelling variations work to help find many more articles and will be trying the alternative spellings that find more names as we continue searching for stories about Shackfords in other newspapers.

Sunday’s Obituary – Jethro Lillicrap, (1880-1922), Husband of Blanche Abbie Shackford (Blog 428)

Blanche Abbie Shackford, the daughter of Luther L and Miranda (Houghton) Shackford) was born on May 17, 1875 in Lyndon, Vermont.  In 1880 she lived with her parents and brother Willie in Concord, Vermont where her father worked as a harnessmaker.  At that age of 7 she was listed in the newspaper among other students who had neither absent or tardy marks while her brother was listed with one absence.  Four years later she lost her brother to diptheria.

Blanche continued to live with her parents in Concord until age 27 when on March 11, 1903 she married 22 year old Jethro Lillicrap, a stone cutter who had been born in England.  Shortly after their marriage he headed to Hardwick to work in the quarries.

Blanche and her husband appear frequently in the Vermont newspapers attending weddings of friends and families, family events, and funerals.  In 1910 they were in Concord with their two sons Paul and William and Blanche’s mother Miranda.  The family was enumerated in the 1920 census in Concord.

Sadly Jethro died on November 14, 1922 at the age of 42.  His life is described in this obituary published in The Caledonian-Record on Nov 21, 1922.

Wedding Wednesday – Stephen Frank Shackford marries Ada Louise Smith March 21, 1878 in Eaton, NH (Blog 426)

Stephen Frank Shackford who sometimes went by Stephen and other times by Frank was the son of Bradley and Hannah B (Shackford) Shackford.  He was born in Eaton, New Hampshire on April 23, 1855 and was living with his parents in Eaton in 1860 and 1870.

On March 21, 1878 when Stephen was 22 he married Ada Louise Smith.  While his parents were listed on the back page of the marriage record, the marriage record does not list any information about her parents, just that her place of birth was Parsonfield (other records list her birth location as Belfast, ME).  Since Smith is such common name, it’s difficult to learn more about Ada’s ancestry.

The newly married couple was in Porter Maine in 1880 – Stephen was working as a laborer and they had a two year old son Eugene.  Thanks to another Shackford family history researcher, we’re aware that Stephen made many small land transactions during the next 15 years.  We have not found him in the 1900 census but do find him listed as a farmer in the 1905 Kennebunk and Wells Town Register with an occupation of farmer. He is not listed in the 1910 census but from city directories we find him in many cities with many different occupations Manchester, Salem, gardener; Beverly; Sanford, shoemaker;  Kennebunkport.  In 1920 we find Stephen in Kennebunkport working as a farm laborer living with Ada and their daughter Gladys who was 18 at the time.

Frank’s wife Ada died in Canal Point, Florida on December 8, 1925 and was buried in Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk, Maine.  It is from these death records that we find her birth date listed as March 24, 1859.   She had given birth to fourteen children!

Frank died in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire on May 25, 1932 of myocarditis  – his death record says that he he had lived there the last 15 years.

Military Monday – Remembering the Shackfords Who Served in World War I (Blog 425)

As we pass the 100th anniversary of the week that the US President, the Senate, and the House endorsed the decision to formally enter the First World War, we’re joining the many family history researchers who are recognizing  Americans who served during WWI.   Because a 1973 fire destroyed over 75% of the Official Military Personnel Record files we’ve used many alternate sources (ship transport lists, gravestones, newspaper articles, Marine Corp Listings) to develop this list. We’d love to hear about anyone we’ve missed and will be working in the future to flush out the stories of these and the many other Shackford veterans.  Also in the future we plan to review what we can learn about Shackfords from their WWI Draft Registrations.

ALONZO C SHACKFORD (1879-1947) – WWI, Pvt 34th Infantry, Sgt QMC 328th, at Fort Riley, Kansas in 1920

Sunday’s Obituary – Franklin Pierce Shackford (1854-1926) (Blog 424)

Franklin Pierce Shackford, the eldest son of Jonathan and Harriet N (Farnham) Shackford was born on June 1, 1854 in  Chester, New Hampshire.  We find him with his parents in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses where his father worked as a farmer and Frank began working in the shoe business.  He married Helen A Lewis in Portsmouth on Dec 14, 1887.  By 1900, Franklin was working as a mason.  He also became a selectman of  Chester and the overseer of the poor.  In 1906 he and his siblings were recipients of the will of his uncle Rufus and moved from Chester to Derry.  Being the recipient of a will might be why Franklin wrote his own will four years later.

By 1920 Franklin was still in Derry working in the shoe business again.  He died on July 5, 1926 at the age of 72, 16 months after the death of his wife.  We learn a lot more about Franklin who also went by F. P. from his obituary which was published in The Derry News on July 9, 1926.

Helen A Lewis, the daughter of John E and Helen Lewis, was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Feb 10, 1860.  Her mother died shortly after her birth as we find her in the 1860 census in Portsmouth five months after her birth with her father and three siblings all under the age of 9.

By 1870 the family had moved to Kittery where Helen was listed as Nellie in the census and in 1880 she was contributing to the family income by working as a domestic servant.

Helen was 27 when she married Franklin Pierce Shackford on Dec 14, 1887 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. had settled in Chester where she had two children.  In 1900 they were in Chester where Franklin was working as a mason and Helen was working as a dressmaker.  By 1910 they had moved to Derry New Hampshire where Franklin was farming.  They moved to Lawrence in 1912 but by 1920 were back in Derry.

Helen died on March 12, 1925 of influenza and was buried on March 15, 1935 in Forest Hill Cemetery in Derry.  Her husband Franklin died less than a year later.  We are grateful to have found her obituary as it provides more details of her life and reiterates that she was a kind, loving, and thoughtful woman who was of exemplary character.
