We expected to get 0 hits when we searched Chronicling America’s update for the newspaper Echo de l’Ouest, but checked anyway because we’d just watched Tammy Hepps’s excellent Webinar The Ancestor Deep-Dive: How to Find Out Evertything There Possibly is to Know About Your Ancestor where she used an example of finding a relative in a foreign language newspaper.
We were quite surprised to find 16 ads for the firm of Shackford & Hume, a leather store in this Minnesota French-Canadian newspaper which ran between May 3, 1895 and August 23, 1895. Ebed L. Shackford who was part of the firm Shackford, Hume & Drebert a wholesale paper company which closed in June 1892 was part owner of the new leather dealer Shackford & Hume.
