Military Monday – Notice Anything Wrong with Roy Frank Shackford’s Maine WWI Draft Card? (Blog 463)

Have you ever filled out a form and listed today’s year instead of the year of your birth date?  We suspect this is what happened when someone created this card for the state of Maine documenting that Roy Frank Shackford, born in 1918 registered for the WWI draft in 1918.

Roy Frank Shackford WWI Draft Registration MaineName, Shackford, Roy Frank;  Age 38; Residence 10 Turner Ct, Bath, Maine; Serial No 26; Order No A1181; Date of Birth 1-17-18; Nationality, Native Born; Race, White; Occupation, Candy Maker; M or S, M; Local Board Sagadahoc Co; Relative, Alice Frances Shackford; Relationship Wife; Address 10 Turney Ct, Bath, Maine

Roy’s birth year is still filled with a bit of uncertainty as his Vermont birth record shows a birth date of January 17, 1881 but his US World War I draft card shows a birth date of January 17, 1880.  We’re recording the year of 1881 in our genealogy software because the birth record was most likely recorded closer to the time of his birth.

but his US draft card shows a birth date of Jan 17, 1880.

We were pleasantly surprised to receive our copy of American Ancestors and discover an article describing how we used the New England Historic Genealogical Society’s Historic Catholic Records Online Project to help discover Catherine (Mullet) Shackford’s parents.

We’d written multiple blogs that described our research about Catherine (Mullet) Shackford describing steps which first took us in the wrong direction.  We wrote a blog wondering why Catherine, my second great grandmother was buried in a plot belonging to Edward W Rowland,  finding the will of Edward’s wife Anna which mentions Catherine and assuming the names of her mother, then rereading Anna’s  will and finding documents in the Historic Catholic Records which helped us realize that Anna was not Catherine’s sister but her step-sister-in-law and helped us find Catherine’s mother’s parents names which are Daniel and Mary Dulley.

This article titled Discoveries from Historic Catholic Records Online which was written by Jean Maguire can be found on page 31 of the Winter edition of American Ancestors by New England Historic Genealogical Society.  We wish to thank all the members of the team of individuals who helped create images of these important records, transcribe them, and fund the project to help ensure that many folks can see them online!  Also a large thanks to Jean who publishes many interesting articles for the New England Historic Genealogical Society!

Sunday’s Obituary – Lizzie May (Shackford) Burke (1884-1984), aged 99 Volunteered 10,000 Hours at the VA!! (Blog 461)

Lizzie May Shackford, the daughter of William Bell and Mary Eliza (Howe) Shackford was born Aug 3, 1884 in Chelsea, Massachusetts.  In 1900 she and her mother were living with Lizzie’s grandfather William T Howe.

On April 27, 1904, Lizzie married William H Burke who worked as a commercial traveler, a traffic clerk for a rubber factory, and a salesman for a bedding company.

From Lizzie’s obituary, we know she died January19, 1984, lived at 195 North Main Street, worked as a secretary at the First Savings & Loan Association, and spent 10,000 hours volunteering at the Veteran’s Association (what an amazing service to veterans!!!) and also helped the Sharon Advocate operate when the person who ran the paper went on vacation .
