Sunday’s Obituary – Edward Warren Shackford, of Eastport, Maine, Weymouth, Massachusetts, and Belfast, Maine (1846-1921) (Blog 486)

Obituary Edward W Shackford The Republican journal. [volume], November 17, 1921Edward W. Shackford died at his home
at the corner of High and Peach streets
last Sunday night at the age of 75 years.
He came to Belfast about four years ago
from East Weymouth, Mass., when his
health failed and he was obliged to give
up his occupation as a house painter. At
that time he had a shock but was able to
be about as usual until two months ago
he had a severe one from which he never
rallied and failed gradually until the end
In all this time he had the unremitting
care of his devoted wife. During his
residence he had made many friends, par-
ticularly among the Odd Fellows, as for
over fifty years he had been a member of
Crescent Lodge, I. O. O. F., of East
Weymouth. Waldo Lodge members have
been attentive to him in his illness. His
widow and one son, Charles L. Shack-
ford of Brookline, Mass., survive him.
Their only daughter, Mrs. A. D. Brewer
of Stockton Springs, died here last sum-
mer. His son and wife arrived here last
Saturday and remained until after the
funeral which took place at his late home
Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock under the
auspices of Waldo Lodge with Rev. N. F.
Atwood of Searsport officiating. His
remains will be taken to East Weymouth
for interment next Friday.

Edward Warren Shackford, the son of Charles William Shackford and Sophia Roberts was born on May 25, 1846 in Eastport, Maine.  He moved into his grandfather’s home when he was seven after his father, master of the Brig Esther Elizabeth was reported lost at sea. Edward then worked in the dry goods business, and eventually became a house painter.

On January 12, 1871 Edward married Georgianna Lee in East Weymouth, Massachusetts.  The marriage was reported in the Ellsworth American.  Edward continued to work as a housepainter in the Boston area while he and his wife raised two children.  As his obituary stated, in 1917 he moved to Belfast, Maine after an illness.  He made many friends in Belfast where he became involved in the Walden Lodge Odd Fellows.  Unfortunately Edward died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Belfast on November 13, 1921 four years after his move. His body was returned to Massachusetts and he was buried in the Fairmont Cemetery in Weymouth, Massachusetts.
