Albert F Shackford (1846-1927), Town Clerk of Barnstead, Population 1317 — Had Many Jobs – Justice, Mail Contractor, Farmer, and Shoe Fitter (Blog 485)

Before 1830, Josiah Ring Shackford moved from Newmarket, New Hampshire to Barnstead where he farmed and raised a large family.  His first son, Samuel Garland Shackford remained in Barnstead where he married Mary Bean Foss and raised five children, the eldest of whom was Albert F Shackford, who was born on July 25, 1846.  Albert was 12 when his mother died and in 1861 when he was 15, he and his siblings went to live with the Huse family while his father served in the Civil War until 1865.

Marriage Record Albert F Shackford Part 1 FamilySearchOn April 25, 1872, Albert who was working as a shoemaker married Helena Augusta Huntress, the widow of John R Jenkins and mother of Charles W. Jenkins.

After his marriage, Albert served as Barnstead town clerk, as a state justice, ran a country store, and was the mail contractor for Barnstead.  After his wife’s death in 1889, Albert moved into his step son’s home and worked as a stock fitter in a shoe shop. By 1910 he owned his own farm and continued working in the shoe business.  Albert died at the age of 81 on December 5, 1927 of cardiac vascular disease.  He was buried in Barnstead.

CHILDREN:

Charles W Jenkins (1869-1945) [step-son from wife’s first marriage], shoe business, married Liller D. Foss.

Eugene Frank Shackford (1873-1941) – moved to Lynn and worked in the shoe business.

Harry Albert Shackford (1875-1928) – lived in Barnstead and worked in the dry goods business.

Note:  Alfred’s middle name is sometimes found listed as Foss or Frank but have not found any primary sources that spell out a middle name.  He did write to Samuel Burnham Shackford regarding family genealogy and Samuel spelled it out as Frank — hoping someday to see these letters & then may spell out his middle name.
