Sympathy Saturday – Beulah May Shackford (1916-1917) (Blog 443)

Beulah May Shackford, the daughter of Eugene Dellmont and Eva Mabel (Flood) Shackford was born August 26, 1916 in Springvale, Maine.

Sadly, she died a little over a year later on December 5, 1917 of convulsions.  Little Beulah May’s death was reported in the newspaper as follows:

Wedding Wednesday – Stephen Frank Shackford marries Ada Louise Smith March 21, 1878 in Eaton, NH (Blog 426)

Stephen Frank Shackford who sometimes went by Stephen and other times by Frank was the son of Bradley and Hannah B (Shackford) Shackford.  He was born in Eaton, New Hampshire on April 23, 1855 and was living with his parents in Eaton in 1860 and 1870.

On March 21, 1878 when Stephen was 22 he married Ada Louise Smith.  While his parents were listed on the back page of the marriage record, the marriage record does not list any information about her parents, just that her place of birth was Parsonfield (other records list her birth location as Belfast, ME).  Since Smith is such common name, it’s difficult to learn more about Ada’s ancestry.

The newly married couple was in Porter Maine in 1880 – Stephen was working as a laborer and they had a two year old son Eugene.  Thanks to another Shackford family history researcher, we’re aware that Stephen made many small land transactions during the next 15 years.  We have not found him in the 1900 census but do find him listed as a farmer in the 1905 Kennebunk and Wells Town Register with an occupation of farmer. He is not listed in the 1910 census but from city directories we find him in many cities with many different occupations Manchester, Salem, gardener; Beverly; Sanford, shoemaker;  Kennebunkport.  In 1920 we find Stephen in Kennebunkport working as a farm laborer living with Ada and their daughter Gladys who was 18 at the time.

Frank’s wife Ada died in Canal Point, Florida on December 8, 1925 and was buried in Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk, Maine.  It is from these death records that we find her birth date listed as March 24, 1859.   She had given birth to fourteen children!

Frank died in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire on May 25, 1932 of myocarditis  – his death record says that he he had lived there the last 15 years.

We have more research to do on this Shackford family – still searching for sources and analyze the specifics regarding Stephen and Ada’s land purchases as some have to do with sales of family land which may help us understand more about the family history.

Sympathy Saturday – Eugene F Shackford (1918-1918) (Blog 409)

Eugene F Shackford, the son of Eugene Dellmont and Eva Mable (Flood) Shackford was born Oct 18, 1918 in Springvale, Maine.  He only lived for 15 days and died on Nov 3 1918 in Springvale.  His death record states his cause of death was asphyxia with a contributing cause of gastritis with vomiting.

Eugene was buried on Nov 5, 1918 in the Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk, Maine.

This was the second child that this family lost  — their daughter Beulah May who was just a year old died  on Dec 5, 1917.  We hope this small blog helps memorialize these young children.
