Rites Tomorrow

Arthur E. Shackford, 76,
of 122 Harvard Place died yesterday
at Memorial Hospital after a
short illness.
A native Syracusan, Mr.
Shackford was employed by the
City of Syracuse’s Bureau of
Transportation. He was a for-
mer widely known musician.
He was a member of the Dan-
forth Congregational Church,
the Pastime Athletic club and
a former member of the Citi-
zen’s Club.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Claire J. Essig Shackford; a
daughter, Mrs Harold Van Bus-
kirk; four grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m.
tomorrow at the John Wysocki
Funeral Home, 1066 W. Gen-
esee St., the Rev. Howard
Horn officiating. Burial will be
in Morningside Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 4
and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the
funeral home.

Arthur Evans Shackford, my great-uncle was born on January 17, 1889 in Syracuse, New York to Joseph Edward and Donna Lovilla (Evans) Shackford. He performed in a piano recital at the age of 14, graduated from Brighton Grammar school, and was working as a clerk at the age of 19 in 1908.

Arthur married Josephine Clara Essig on January 2, 1912.  They lived in Syracuse and Niagara where he worked as a clerk, a gear cutter, an inspector at a gem shop, a clerk in a clothing store, a salesman, an inspector at a factory, at the Smith & Corona Typewriter company, and at Syracuse’s Bureau of Transportation.

Arthur’s obituary says he was also a musician.  Our only reference to his music is a mention that he conducted a jazz orchestra in 1919 — it would be nice to know what type of musician he was and where he performed!

Treasure Chest Thursday – The 1894 Visit of Messrs Thomas Evans and Son A. T. Evans To Owego, New York and to see daughter Donna L Shackford!! (Blog 439)

We found Thomas Evans, his wife Jane, and children in the Owego, New York 1855 and 1860 and 1865 census records so we decided to take a look in New York newspapers to see if we could learn more about Thomas.

We were hoping to find articles about their life in the 1860s but found this great newspaper article about a 1894 visit to Owego which helps us verify that Thomas Evans of Chicago who had lived in Owego, New York was the father of A. T. Evans and that his daughter was living in Syracuse.  This article tells us something new – Thomas was a crockery dealer on Front Street (a street we can find on Google maps).

Evans of Chicago were in town Sunday
and Monday to call on old time friends.
The former was for a long time a crock
ery dealer on Front steet, and the lat-
ter, his son, passed his boyhood here,
going to Chicago over a score of years
ago. They left Tuesday on the Lehigh
at 8:15 a. m. on their way to visit the
former’s daughter at Syracuse.

We decided to look further in New York papers and found the wedding announcement of Arthur T. Shackford to Mary Genevieve Holley (or Holly) which confirms that the family moved to Chicago around 1870.  The nieces Clara and Bessie Towne were also mentioned Arthur’s sister’s wedding announcement.

The following wedding announcement
from the Chicago Times of Wednesday
June 5, 1889, will interest many of the
RECORD’S readers, as the groom was an
old Owego boy, son of Thomas Evans,
who conducted a crockery store on Front
street for many years previous to 1870:
“Miss Marry Genevieve Hooley was mar-
ried last evening to Arthur T. Evans.
The ceremony was held at the residence
of the bride’s sister, Mrs. E. B. Butler,
3408 Michigan boulevard. The Rev.
Dr. F. W. Gunsaulaus of Plymouth
church officiated. They were attended
by Clara and Bessie Towne, two little
nieces of the groom. Each carried a
basket of marguerites The bride was
attired in a white surah costume, antique
in style. She wore a white tulle veil
caught up with a crescent of diamonds,
a present from the groom. The couple
left at 9 o’clock last night for a three
week’s eastern trip.

We then looked for the Chicago newspaper article regarding Arthur’s wedding and discovered it was also published in the Chicago Daily Tribune on June 5, 1889.  After discovering that the Evans family mentioned in the Chicago Tribune, we wondered if we could find Thomas Evans in the newspaper and found his death notice mentioning his daughter Margaret (Evans) Patrick.

Patrick at Swift, Ill. Funeral Thursday, March

Ill.

This verifies that the gravestone at Lombard Cemetery is that of the same Thomas Evans and that the Jane buried there was his wife.

We still have some research questions:

Was there a death certificate for Thomas Evans? Should see if can find in DuPage County.

Can we find any documentation to verify the father of Thomas Evans (1824-1911) (we suspect his name is also Thomas as Thomas is listed as a jr in many sources)?

Who were the parents of his wife Jane Kilborn  ANSWER:  Jane was the daughter of William and Eliza (Lester) Kilborn.

Who are the other two people buried in the same grave site in Lombard, DuPage, Illinois – T. Evans d 1884, age 92 yrs (calculated born 1792)  — suspect Thomas might be Arthur’s grandfather but have not yet verified this cannot find any records of Delia July 7, 1876, age 36 yrs (calculated born 1840)?

Are there any records that help us learn more about Thomas’ crockery store?

Were there relatives who stayed in the Owego area who might helps us learn more about Thomas and Jane Evans?  Answer: Margaret Jane Kilborn’s siblings remained in the Oswego area.

Stella Jane Evans (1860-1918) – married Lucian F Towne who was hospitalized at National Home for the Disabled in 1910.  Stella married Frank Warren Whittier of Oregon and died there on Feb 9, 1918.

Donna Lovilla Evans (1865-1908) – married Joseph Edward Shackford.

Tombstone Tuesday – Donna Lovilla (Evans) Shackford (1865-1928) (Blog 408)

Donna Lovilla Evans, the daughter of Thomas and Jane N (Kilburn) Evans was born in  Owego, New York on June 4, 1865.  She’s listed in the New York 1865 census and then crossed out, probably because the census was taken on June 13th and the census taker realized that it was supposed to reflect those in the area on June 1, 1865. Others in the census were her father Thomas, her mother Jane and siblings Arthur T, Stella, May E (Margaret).

The family moved from New York to the DuPage, Illinois area around 1870 but we don’t find them in any census.  We’re pretty certain that Donna’s mother died in DuPage in 1874 when Donna was just nine years old and find her and her siblings living with their widowed father in the 1880 census.

We’re not sure where Donna met her husband, Joseph Edward Shackford who was 12 year her senior with two children at home; however he was a traveling salesman who frequented the Chicago area.  Their wedding on Oct 20, 1887 was described as a Brilliant Social Event held at the Central Park Congregational Church in Oak Park. Her brother Arthur T Evans was the best man and the reception was held at her sister Stella Towne’s home.  Her other sister Mrs Will (Margaret) Patrick is listed as an attendee along with many friends and relatives.  After the wedding the couple headed to Syracuse, NY.

Donna did return home to visit her sister the next summer and is found in the 1892 census with her husband Joseph, his first two children William and Joseph and a new son Arthur Evans.   Two years later she had a visit from her father and brother Arthur who were returning from a trip to Owego.

Donna and her husband seem to have enjoyed socializing by dancing, eating, and playing cards with friends and family.  Their 12th and 15th anniversary parties were mentioned in the Syracuse Journal with the names of the many attendees using formal names for the children i.e. Master Arthur Shackford and two new additions: Master Thomas L Shackford and Miss Donna M Shackford.

Sadly Donna died five years after her 15th anniversary at the age of 43 after having been ill three years from a bile duct obstruction.  She was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.  Thanks to Bill Parker who gave permission to share this photo, we can see her gravestone:

Friday Faces From the Past – Joseph Edward Shackford (1849-1920) (Blog 407)

Joseph Edward Shackford, the son of William Brown Shackford and Catherine T (Mullett) Shackford was born Oct 22, 1849 and baptized at the Holy Cross Church in Boston on December 6, 1849.  We find him in the 1850 census with his parents and sister May Kate Shackford, age 4; in the 1855 Massachusetts census, in the 1860 census, and in the 1865 Massachusetts census.

Joseph would have just turned 16 when his father who had served in the Civil War died in November 1866 and started work sometime thereafter working as a clerk at 22 Broad St.

He married Elizabeth A (Lizzie) Myers, the daughter of Henry J V Myers, a policeman on Feb 10, 1873, and switched from clerking to working as a bookkeeper.  The family moved to Watertown, Massachusetts where we find Joseph, Lizzie and two children William Henry  and Joseph Edward in the 1880 census and also where Joseph and his wife won prizes at the Grand Army Fair in Dec 1881.  Sometime thereafter the family moved to Syracuse where our first record pertains to their December 1866 divorce which was described in the Syracuse Herald.  The newspaper stated that the suit alleged adultery by Mrs Shackford and gave custody of the two sons William H and Joseph E to their father.  The newspaper also described Joseph’s job as a commercial traveller.

Ten months later on October 20, 1887, Joseph married Miss Donna Lovilla Evans of Chicago, the daughter of Thomas Evans in a “Brilliant Social Event” and describes the happy couple departing for their future home in Syracuse, NY. They first moved to 2 East Castle Street, then to 103 East Castle.  In 1892 we find Joseph, Donna, William and Joseph along with a new son Arthur Evans Shackford in Syracuse. The couple celebrated their 12th anniversary in October 1899 with card games and dancing and appeared in multiple other newspaper articles describing entertaining.

They appeared in the 1900 census with two new children Thomas L and Donna M Shackford and are mentioned in the 1902 newspaper celebrating their 15th anniversary celebrating by playing whist.  They were also mentioned in the newspaper in 1903 due to electrical light fires occurring in the home.

In 1908, Donna who had been ill for three years died at the age of 43 due to an obstructed bile duct.  From the 1910 census we see that Joseph who was working for the National Lead Company hired a servant to help out at home as he was still traveling.  In 1914 he received an award in New York in the white lead selling competition.  In 1917 he was recognized in the Syracuse Herald for his 30 years of work representing the National Lead Company.  He died on November 28, 1920 and is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse.  His obituary describes his very active involvement in the masons & other clubs in Syracuse.

Member of Many Orders and of Citizen’s Club Passes Away

Joseph E. Shackford, 71, well
known in Syracuse Masonic circles
and for the past 32 years a resident
of the city, died Sunday night at St.
Joseph’s Hospital. Mr Shackford
was for 29 years with the National
Lead Company, retiring from active
business four years ago.
He was a member of Central City
Lodge, No 305, F. and A. M., Central
City Chapter, No. 13, R. A. M., Cen-
tral City Council, No. 70. Central
City Commandery, No. 23, Knights
Templar and of the Central City
Scottish Rite bodies. He was also a
member of Ziyara Temple, Nobles of
the Mystic Shrine, Keder Khan
Grotto, and the Citizens’ Club of
Syracuse.
Mr. Shackford is survived by four
sons: Joseph E., Jr., of Baldwins-
ville; Thomas L. of St. Augustine,
Fla.; Arthur E. of Syracuse, and
William H. of Troy, and by a
daughter Mrs. William J. Brown of
New York City.
Masonic funeral services will be
held at the undertaking rooms of W.
A. Fancher, 112 Seymour st., at a
date and hour to be fixed later.

Treasure Chest Thursday – Joseph Edward Shackford Marries May Chadwick Roe May 8, 1912 (Blog 396)

Joseph Edward Shackford, Jr, the son of Joseph Edward and Elizabeth (Lizzie) A (Myers) Shackford was born September 25, 1876 in Watertown, Massachusetts. He was living in Watertown in 1880 with his parents (father working as a bookkeeper), and brother William H, and his mother’s brother who is listed as Linus in the census.

Joseph’s parents won prizes in Watertown at the Grand Army Fair which was held Dec 14, 1881 so it was probably sometime after this when the family moved to Syracuse and shortly thereafter when his parents divorced.  Joseph was only 10 and custody was awarded to Joseph’s father. We find Joseph at age 15 in the 1892 census living with his father his new wife Donna (Evans), his brother William, and a new brother Arthur, in the 1893 Syracuse City Directory living at 104 E Castle with his father and grandmother.  We also find him in Syracuse in the 1900 census working as a billing clerk and in the 1910 census as a salesman for a glass company.

On May 8, 1912 he applied for a marriage license and on the same day married May Chadwick Roe, the daughter of Frank A and Emilie Chadwick.  From their marriage application we learn that Joseph was living with his parents at 210 W Beard Ave and was working as a bookkeeper.  He was 35 and this was his first marriage.   May had previously been married to a Mr Roe who had died.  [We believe this was Frederick William Roe who died in Nov 1905 from appendicitis but haven’t found enough proof yet.]

May’s parents are listed as Frank A Chadwick and Emma Young  who was born in Canada.  [May’s mother might have been Emilie Amelia Fose but we’re still checking]  May had been living at 1668 S Salina St.  From their marriage record ( not pictured), we learn that their minister was Frederick W Betts and the witnesses to their marriage were both fathers, J E Shackford and F A Chadwick.

Joseph registered for the World War I draft in 1918 listing his address as 400 James Street, Syracuse stating he was working a manager at the Syracuse Glass Co.  His wife was listed as his nearest relative.  Interestingly we find the newly married couple listed in two census records for 1920 – on January 2 at 721 E Genesee,Syracuse working for a wholesale glass company and on January 30th in Scranton Pennsylvania as a manager for a glass company.  (They probably moved to Pennsylvania during the month of January)

By 1930 the couple had moved to Washington State and Joseph was working as a commercial traveler for a stamping company.  They continued to live in Washington in 1940 where May died on Oct 23 in Seattle.  Her death record states she was 74 but we believe she was actually 64 [This matches her age at marriage & census records].  Joseph died in Seattle eight years later on March 18, 1948.  The Seattle Times published an obituary which stated that he had been a salesman with the Puget Sound Stamp Works, was a member of the Seattle Commodity Club and the Christian Science Church.  According to FindAGrave, Joseph was cremated and the location of his ashes is not known.
