Wedding Wednesday – Cora A Shackford Marries Rev Charles Tilton in 1883 (Blog 448)

Cora A Shackford, the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary E (Cleaves) Shackford was born March 22, 1860 in Lowell, Massachusetts.  She attended school in Charlestown and in Lasselle Seminary, Auburndale.  We presume she met Charles Tilton, the son of Rev Rufus and Harriet (Newell) Tilton, her future husband while he was boarding at her parent’s home in 1880.  They married on June 7, 1883, the day after he graduated from Boston University School of Theology.

Tilton-Shackford Wedding Boston Daily Globe June 8, 1883 at Newspaper Archive“Tilton-Shackford. A largely-attended wedding took place last evening in the Monument Square M. E. Church, between Miss Cora A Shackford, daughter of Mr and Mrs Nathaniel Shackford of Charlestown, and Rev Charles Tilton, pastor of the City Point M E Church, South Boston. The couple were united in the bonds of matrimony by Rev W T Perrin, pastor of the church, after which ceremony a private reception was held at the residence of the bride, on Union street. The ushers were C W Marsh, Frank Dantforth and Thomas Hodgden of Charlestown, and Henry Munday of Cambridge. The happy couple will reside in South Boston.

The couple moved a lot as Charles served in many Churches – in South Boston, Haverhill, Winthrop, Salem, Derry, New Hampshire, and Byfield.  They returned to South Boston as their final church assignment in “active ministry”.   Cora died in Byfield, Massachusetts on March 11, 1930 after a long illness followed by Charles five years later on August 2, 1935.
