Wedding Wednesday – Gladys Stella Shackford of Kennebunkport marries Harry G Smith on March 27, 1920 (Blog 389)

Gladys Stella Shackford, the daughter of Stephen Frank and Ada (Smith) Shackford) was born Jan 26, 1901 in Kennebunk, Maine.  We find her with many of her siblings in the 1905 Kennebunk Town Register and in the 1920 census which was enumerated on January 28, 1920.

On March 27, 1920 Gladys married Harry G Smith – the marriage was announced in the Biddeford Journal.  We believe that the Mrs Campbell mentioned in the wedding announcement was Nellie Lena (Shackford) Campbell.

Biddeford Journal 29 Mar 1920

Harry G. Smith of Limerick and
Gladys S. Shackford of Kennebunk-
port were united in marriage at the
First Baptist parsonage, late Satur-
day afternoon. The double ring ser-
vice was used and the couple were at-
tended by Mrs. Campbell, sister of
the bride.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith will reside in
Kennebunkport.

We haven’t found birth records but believe Harry and Gladys had a daughter, Doris Smith and a son.  We’re not certain what happened to Harry but believe that before 1930 Gladys had a son with the last name Libby.

Gladys then married George Elliot Flower, the son of Charles and Mary E Flower on 21 Jun 1930 in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.  We find them in the 1940 census with son Libby who is listed with the last name Flower and two daughters – the middle daughter Gertrude, age 6 is living in Dover with cousins Alfred and Thelma Mairs.

From the 1953 Newburyport phone directory, we learn that George died on April 26, 1952 followed shortly by Gladys who died on April 18, 1953.  We’re not sure where they were buried.

Back in 2000 we had help with this genealogy line from some of Glady’s descendents. They were very busy at the time but shared some birth dates, relationship information, and corrected some errors from earlier drafts.  We wish to thank them for their help!
