Sarah Lincoln Harris was born July 28 1834 in Barnstable, Massachusetts to Rev Edward Nathan and Mary Ann (Robblee) Harris. She was only 18 when she married William Shackford in St John, New Brunswick where we believe her father was working as a minister. Her husband received his seaman’s certificate in Philadelphia, served aboard the Nahant in 1864, and was honorably discharged on November 11, 1865 while they kept a home in Eastport, Maine. They moved to Philadelphia before 1880 and in 1881 he served aboard the S S Ohio and then worked for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company traveling to and from Colon. They raised two daughters, Caroline Noyes and Marcia Parepa and on occasion accompanied him on a trip to Colon. The family was occasionally mentioned in the newspaper when they summered in Cape May.
When Sarah died on October 2, 1897, her obituary was published the next day in the New York Times:
Mrs. William Shackford.
Sarah Lincoln Shackford, wife of Capt.
William Shackford, for many years senior
Captain of the Pacific Mail Steamship Com-
pany’s fleet, died at the residence of her
son-in-law, Silas Furman, at the Brockholst,
101 West Eighty-fifth Street, yesterday.
Mrs. Shackford had been ill for some time
past. Her daughter, Miss Marcia Shack-
ford, married Silas Furman, half-brother of
Mrs. James M. Waterbury and Mrs. Frank
Lazarus, last year.
CHILDREN:
Caroline Noyes Shackford (1854-1913) – music teacher in Baltimore, moved near her sister in her 50s and the two performed opera and sang at church events together
Marcia Parapa Shackford (1872-1933) – married Silas Holmes Furman in 1896
