Captain William Shackford (1783-1870), Commanded the Active, Sally, Orient, Blockade, Five Brothers, Lady Sherbrook, Sarah, and the Splendid (Blog 484)

The chapter titled Captain John Shackford and Family in Eastport and Passamaquoddy: A Collection of Historical and Background Sketches was written by William Shackford’s nephew, Samuel Shackford of ChicagoA part of this chapter describes the life of William Shackford (1783-1870).

William, the second son of John and Esther, born at
Newbury Nov. 23, 1783, was a seaman from early boy-
hood. He commanded the “Active” in 1807, afterward the
“Sally,”, “Orient,” “Blockade,” “Five Brothers,” and was
engaged principally in the West India trade. He com-
manded the brig “Dawn,” which was taken by a French
cruiser during the wars of Napoleon I. and taken into France.
On being released, he crossed over to England, and from
there worked his passage home as a sailor before the mast.
He then commanded the “Lady Sherbrook” and the “Sarah.”
His last vessel was the “Splendid,” a fine vessel, built espe-
cially for the passenger trade between Eastport and Boston.
About 1822, at the age of fifty, he retired from the sea, and
engaged with his brother Jacob and the Hon. Lorenzo
Sabine in mercantile pursuits. He died in 1870, aged eighty-
seven, leaving, by his second wife, Mary, daughter of Cap-
tain Jacob Lincoln, sons,- John William, who for many
years commanded the steam packet-ship “Illinois” and
other ocean steamships, and is now master of Jay Gould’s
famous steam yacht “Atalanta”; Captain Edward Wallace, a
successful ship-master; and Ebed Lincoln, who, after serving
in the Union Army during the Rebellion, settled at St. Paul,
Minn., where he is now, a thrifty merchant.

This document doesn’t list William’s first wife whose Sept 2, 1836 or 1837 death was reported in Kenneth Wiley’s Vital Records from the Eastport Sentinel of Eastport, Maine 1818-1900.  She was buried in the Hillside Cemetery in Eastport, Maine.

Franklin P Shackford, of Chester, NH, One of Dr Rufus Shackford’s 13 Heirs (Blog 476)

Franklin P Shackford heir of Rufus Shackford CHESTER, The Derry Enterprise (Derry, New Hampshire), 16 February 1906
The Derry Enterprise, 16 February 1906

Franklin P. Shackford is one of the
13 heirs to the property of his uncle,
Dr. Rufus Shackford, of Portland, Me.
Mrs George Currier and sister are
two of the other heirs living in Chester.

Dr Rufus F Shackford was born December 17, 1816 in Chester, New Hampshire to Samuel and Harriet (Currier) Shackford.  He married twice – Louisa Cummings and Mary Ann Bateman, both of whom who died before Rufus.  He died at the age of 85 on September 24, 1902. Based on the above newspaper article, we believe the probate occurred four years after his death in 1906.   We can’t find copy of his probate records online at this time as these years are not yet available digitally.

We believe that George Currier mentioned in the article was the son of Rufus’s sister Abigail and John Currier but are not sure which sister is referred in the article.  Here’s a list of the other possible heirs:

Children of John Currier & Abigail Shackford: Eliza J Currier, Charles R Currier, Helen Abbie Currier Coates, and George Washington Currier

Children of John Shackford: Georgiana Shackford Allard, Samuel Shackford, and George Franklin Shackford

Children of Jonathan Shackford:  Franklin Pierce Shackford and Olive A Shackford Symmes (died in 1903)

Children of William Adams Rice and Sarah Shackford: Albert William Rice and Charlotte Adelaide Rice Holbrook (unsure when she died)

Children of George Shackford:  George Alonzo Shackford and Hannah Elizabeth Shackford

Children of Luther Calvin Shackford:  Luther L Shackford

Sunday’s Obituary – Lydia A (Shackford) Buck (1832-1892) born in Alfred, Maine (Blog 454)

Obituary Lydia A. Buck, Cambridge Chronicle (Cambridge, Massachusetts), 9 January 1892
Cambridge Chronicle, 9 Jan 1892

Lydia A. Buck.

Lydia A. Buck, wife of Abijah R. Buck,
clerk of the Wood Memorial Church, died
at the her home, 180 Windsor street, Cam-
bridge, Tuesday. Mrs. Buck had been
an invalid for twenty years, and death
has ended a life of long suffering. She
bore her affliction with remarkable for-
titude and patience, and loved her family
dearly. A husband, son and daughter
survive her. The funeral was held Thurs-
day afternoon at her residence. Rev.
Isaiah W. Sneath of the Wood Memorial
Church conducted the service. The burial
was private.

Lydia, the daughter of Noah and Hannah (Smith) Shackford was born about 1829 in Alfred, Maine.  In 1850 we find her in Alfred with her father Noah, his second wife Bethulah and siblings Japhet, Abigail, William K, Bethular J, and Stephen S. When the 1860 census was taken in September, she was living at home in Alfred, Maine with her father, Noah, stepmother, and siblings William and Bethular next to brother Japhet but on September 13, 1860 she married Abijah R Buck, a machinist in Boston, Massachusetts.

The family was in Boston in 1865 but moved to Cambridge by 1870 where they settled on Winsor Street where Abijah continued his profession as a machinist and they raised two children.

Lydia died on January 5, 1892 in Cambridge from exhaustion from pneumonia at the age of 63. Lydia’s husband Abijah remained in Cambridge until his death at age 74 on September 22, 1908.  We’re thankful for this obituary which gives us a bit more information about Lydia’s life than we can gather from the vital records we’ve found.

CHILDREN:

Fred Maye Buck (1863-1900) – worked as a machinist, married Lillian E Merrill

Mary Lucille Buck (1868-1900) – single

Aug 28th [1763] Abigail Daughter to Mr Samll & Elizath Shackford was baptized. (Blog 453)

While cleaning out our hardcopy genealogy files we found a folder titled SHACKFORD, ABIGAIL 1763- which included one document – a hardcopy printout showing page 154 and 155 with a title NEWINGTON CHURCH RECORDS.  BAPTISMs with a handwritten note NHGR Vol 4.

We were able to find a digital copy of the original source  on Google Books and know from previous research that Abigail was the daughter of Samuel and Abigail (Ring) Shackford  who we’ve previously written about.

Augst 28th Abigail Daughter to Mr Samll & Elizath Shack-

In his book New Hampshire Families in the Eighteenth Century, Henry Hardon lists Abigail’s birth as April 21, 1763 referencing a family Bible that was in the possession of a Francis A Door of Woburn, Mass in 1920. This birth date aligns with the baptism date listed in the New Hampshire Genealogical Record.

This is all we know of Abigail at this time – we’d love to know if the Bible referenced was preserved and learn if it or any other sources include any further references to her.  We’d also want to thank those who spent time documenting these records back in 1907!

Wedding Wednesday – Abby Shackford marries John Whitton in 1859 (Blog 452)

While cleaning out our hardcopy genealogy files we found a folder titled Abby Shackford 1823- which included one document – a hardcopy printout of the 26 June 1859 marriage record of John Whitton and Abby Shackford. The marriage record tells us that she was born about 1823/4 in Alfred, Maine to Noah and Hannah Shackford, that this was her first marriage but the second marriage for her new husband, John Whitton, a paper-maker.

Marriage Record Abby Shackford John Whitton
Marriage Record John Whitton to Abbie Shackford, June 26, 1859

In the 1850 census, we find Noah and his second wife Bethulah and probably siblings Japhet, Abigail, Lydia, William, Bethular, and Stephen.  It’s interesting that none of Noah’s children by his first wife Hannah who now range in age of 19 to 36 have not yet married.

We’d love to know what brought Abby from Alfred, Maine around age 30 to Norfolk, Massachusetts, a distance of 110 miles.  We do see her name on the 1855 census living in John Whitten’s home who is now a widow – she is 31 years old and has no occupation listed.  John’s children John W, age 22, Theodore A, age 21, Albert G, age 20, Sarah, age 18, and Josephine, age 16 are living in the home along with Sarah Taylor from Nova Scotia.

Abby and John’s marriage was announced on June 25, 1859 and they were married the next day on June 26th.  Five years later in Nov 1865 when Abigail was 41 and her husband 60, she had a daughter, Martha Louisa Whitton.  Fortunately John never changed occupations from paper-maker which has helped us verify that this was the family living at Grove near Washington in Newton in 1875, 1877 and in 1878 when John died on May 28, 1878 at the age of 72.  His death record is difficult to read but the cause of death appears to be listed as acute insanity.

Abigail remained in the home until 1887 when she moved to Waltham.  She died on November 23, 1891 in Cambridge of cancer of oventum (possibly ovarian cancer??).  Her sister Lydia (Shackford) Buck who had been an invalid for 20 years died less than two months later in Cambridge.  We’re unsure where Abigail was buried or if she or her husband left a probate record.

CHILDREN:

Martha Louisa Whitton (1865-1931) – married Alton Augustus Reed in 1886 and William Herbert Boutwell in 1900.  She had no children.

Saml Shurburn and Abigl Shackford wr marryd ye 11th June 1719 (Blog 451)

We’re slowly cleaning out a genealogy file cabinet, finding or creating a digitized copy of the paper, cleaning up our RootsMagic files, and writing blogs about the information we find in our files! Going to be a long project but will be happy to have three file drawers to use when we’re done!!

Today we discovered this document filed under Abigail Shackford (abt 1700-abt 1734)

We don’t know much about Abigail other than this marriage record and the fact that we can place her as the child of Samuel Shackford (abt 1674-abt 1731) because we find her indirectly listed in her father’s will which was proved on Mar 11, 1730/1. He left his son-in-law Samuel Sherburn the Eastern end of a house.  We presume Abigail died before August 25, 1734 when Samuel remarried.  We don’t know if she had any children – think not as his children seem to have christening dates after his remarriage.

Henry Hardon places Abigail’s birth at 1700 — we haven’t found any sources and presume that’s an estimation based on her marriage date.
