Antoinette C Laurette, the daughter of Jean B Laurette, a Napoleon sympathizer who left France for the United States when she was just ten years old was born in May 1808 in Paris, France. When she turned twenty, she married William A Shackford of Newington, New Hampshire. We find her living with William in Newmarket in the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 census records. They raised five children before her husband died in Newmarket on September 3, 1885. She died ten years later in Newmarket on November 22, 1895 where this obituary was published. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery.
MRS. ANTOINETTE C SHACKFORD.
Mrs Antoinette C Shackford, widow
of William A. Shackford, died at her
home in Newmarket this (Friday) morn-
ing, after a few day’s illness, of peri-
tonitis. She was born in Paris, France,
May 24, 1808, and came to Boston with
her parents Dec 31, 1818. Her father,
Jean B Laurette, was a sympathizer
with Napoleon I., and was obliged to
flee to America, with his wife, two sons
and two daughters. M. Laurette was an
intimate friend of Gen Lafayette, and
entertained him on his visit to America.
The deceased was married to William
A. Shackford in 1829 and has resided
in Newmarket ever since her marriage.
She was the mother of three sons and
two daughters, only one of whom, Miss
Mary, survives her. Some six years
ago she lost her eyesight, and has been
tenderly cared for ever since by her sur-
viving child. Mrs. Shackford was of a
kindly, genial disposition, and was high-
ly esteemed by all who knew her.
The funeral will occur on Monday at
2 o’clock P.M., from her late residence.

Note: We find Antoinette’s name listed as Mrs Antoinette C. Laurette Shackford, Widow Agnette Shackford, Miss Entwinnett C Laurent, Miss Entwinett C. Lanveat, Entwinett A Lambert, Entwinett C Lamest, Entwinett C Laureat, Antonett Shackford, Catherine Shackford, Annie C Shackford, Annette C Shackford. We have searched multiple sources using all these variants of her last name for any information about her father Jean B (we’ve also tried John…) but have found no records of him or her mother who is listed as Catherine Jessop in Antoinette’s obituary. We did however find her will which we’ll share in a future blog.
