Mrs. Melvina C. Shackford, widow
of the late Granville Shackford, and
a highly esteemed lady, died Monday
morning at 4 o’clock in this city, at
the age of 77 years. Mrs. Shackford
made her home in Saco for many
year and went from there to Old
Orchard where she took an active
part in the Methodist church. She
was of a loving and kind disposition,
and her friends speak of her in glow-
ing terms for her many acts of kind-
ness.
Mrs. Shackford died on her birth-
day.
She is survived by one daughter,
Mrs. Howard Gilpatric of Hingham,
and one grandson, Howard Gilpatric,
also of Hingham.
Melvina Currier was born to Oren and Patience (Hanson) Currier on July 30, 1840 in Dover, Maine. Her mother died in Dec 1856 when she was 16 and father remarried in September 1857. In 1860 Melina was living at home in Athens working as a factory hand and her father died in 1864. By 1870 she had moved to Biddeford where she was running a boarding house for a cotton mill.
On June 12, 1872 Melvina married Granville Shackford, a civil war veteran. They moved to Saco and lived on Boom Road where Granville had a farm and served on the city council. By 1900 they had moved to Old Orchard where they resided until Granville’s death on December 11, 1916. Granville’s pension was transferred to her on January 5, 1917 but she died six months later on July 30, 1917 in Biddeford. She was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. We’re fortunate to have found her obituary which lets us know that she was very involved in the Methodist church and was loved by many in her community.

Jesse Maria Shackford (1873-1939) – married Howard Gilpatric in 1899.
