Cambridge Chronicle, 9 Jan 1892

Lydia A. Buck.

Lydia A. Buck, wife of Abijah R. Buck,
clerk of the Wood Memorial Church, died
at the her home, 180 Windsor street, Cam-
bridge, Tuesday. Mrs. Buck had been
an invalid for twenty years, and death
has ended a life of long suffering. She
bore her affliction with remarkable for-
titude and patience, and loved her family
dearly. A husband, son and daughter
survive her. The funeral was held Thurs-
day afternoon at her residence. Rev.
Isaiah W. Sneath of the Wood Memorial
Church conducted the service. The burial
was private.

Lydia, the daughter of Noah and Hannah (Smith) Shackford was born about 1829 in Alfred, Maine.  In 1850 we find her in Alfred with her father Noah, his second wife Bethulah and siblings Japhet, Abigail, William K, Bethular J, and Stephen S. When the 1860 census was taken in September, she was living at home in Alfred, Maine with her father, Noah, stepmother, and siblings William and Bethular next to brother Japhet but on September 13, 1860 she married Abijah R Buck, a machinist in Boston, Massachusetts.

The family was in Boston in 1865 but moved to Cambridge by 1870 where they settled on Winsor Street where Abijah continued his profession as a machinist and they raised two children.

Lydia died on January 5, 1892 in Cambridge from exhaustion from pneumonia at the age of 63. Lydia’s husband Abijah remained in Cambridge until his death at age 74 on September 22, 1908.  We’re thankful for this obituary which gives us a bit more information about Lydia’s life than we can gather from the vital records we’ve found.
