Alice M (Shackford) Powell (1873-1905) of Barnstead, NH died of Heart Disease at age 32 (Blog 502)

Alice M Shackford, the daughter of William Henry Shackford and Mary Augusta Smart was born in Barnstead, New Hampshire on Feb 14, 1873. In June 1880 she was living in Barnstead with her parents and two siblings where her father worked as a hotelkeeper.

Alice was working as a sticher when she married Harry Lewis Powell, a shoemaker on October 27, 1894.

They remained in Barnstead living with Alice’s step grandmother in 1900 – he worked as a stock fitter in a shoe shop and she as a forelady in a shoe shop

Sadly, Alice died at the age of 32 on June 28, 1905 of a long term heart condition which seems to have been diagnosed when she was about 17 years old. She was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Barnstead. Her husband Harry Lewis Powell remarried widow Mary E (Emery) Higgins in August 1930.

Alice Baldwin Shackford (1873-1936) married William Frederick Pickard on April 11, 1900 (Blog 501)

Alice Baldwin Shackford, the youngest child of Benjamin Franklin and Grace Grizella (Watson) Shackford was born March 2, 1876 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. She was only three when her 40 year old father suddenly died of heart disease. Alice lived at home with her mother and at age 24 was working as a cashier when she married William Frederick Pickard, the son of William Pickard and Ann Fitzgerald.

Unfortunately we don’t know much about Alice other than finding her name on documents – she lost a day old child on November 23, 1903 in Chelsea and is listed on her husband’s Sept 12, 1918 WWI draft registration. She’s also listed in the 1920, the 1930, and the 1940 census records, and in multiple city directories. From those records, we can tell the family lived at 154 Sagamore in Chelsea, 16 Harvard St in Everett, and 35 Glendale in Everett. We’d love to know more about Alice’s life.

Alice’s husband William died on January 15, 1936 in Everett and she lived with her daughter, Lena G Pickard, a school teacher until she died on October 21, 1943 in Everett.
