Military Monday – Charles Augustus Shackford, WWII Veteran (1922-2013) (Blog 397)

We don’t know much about Charles Augustus Shackford.  From the Massachusetts Birth Index we learn that he was born in 1922.  We’re not sure who his parents were – in the 1930 census he is listed as the grandson of the widow Alice M (Short) Shackford, the widow of Charles Augustus Shackford (1868-abt 1927) and we also find him in the 1940 census living with Alice and her two children Herbert and Alice, this time listed as a son.

We do know that Charles enlisted in the Army from Boston on June 27, 1942 as a Private in the Signal Corp.  His enlistment record states that he had a civilian occupation as a welder and was single at the time of his enlistment. Unfortunately we don’t know anything more about his service.

At some time Charles married Vivienne June Aitken of Canada – we find them at 18 Cedar Street in Boston in 1966 – his occupation listed as retired.  They moved to Ruskin Florida sometime before 1990, then to Sun City.  By 1994 he moved to Dothan, Alabama.

Charles’ January 15, 2013 death was announced in the January 22, 2013 Dothan Eagle stating he was now a resident of Bonifay, Florida and stated that his wife Vivienne June Aitken Shackford was still living.  Vivian died in Dothan on March 7, 2013.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Who were Charles’ parents, who were Vivienne June’s parents, when and where did Charles get married, where did Charles serve in WWII?
