Memorial Day – Honoring SHACKFORDs who Died While Serving in the United States Armed Forces (Blog 500)

Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was a day to commemorate the men who died while serving on either side of the Civil War.   Today it is a national holiday for remembering the men and women who died while while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  Today we recognize the three SHACKFORDs who died while serving in the military.  If I missed any, I’d love to hear from you!

REVOLUTIONARY WAR

Seth Ring Shackford (1754-1777) – son of Samuel Shackford and Elizabeth Ring.  He was 23 when he was killed in action on October 7, 1777 while serving in Capt Frye’s Company, Colonel Scammell’s 3rd New Hampshire Regiment. at Saratoga, New York. We assume he was one of many soldiers buried on the battlefield.

CIVIL WAR

Gilman Shackford (1828-1864), son of Andrew and Hannah Shackford of Alfred, Maine served with Co B, 8th Maine Infantry.  He was 35 when he died at Hammond Hospital from wounds on August 14, 1864.  He is buried in grave 12609 in Arlington. He left a wife – Celia (Wormwood) Shackford.

Walter Emory Shackford (1847-1865) – son of John William Shackford and Mary Cole McLelland.  Walter served as a Private in Company H, 5th Regiment, Virginia Calvary. He was only 18 when he died on April 27, 1865 from injuries incurred at “Five Forks” in Dinwiddie.
