Sunday’s Obituary – Harry L Shackford of Kennebunk and Biddeford, ME, (1884-1953) (Blog 495)

Birth Record Harry L ShackfordHarry L Shackford, the fourth child of Stephen Frank and Ada Louise (Smith) Shackford was born May 9, 1884 in Freedom, New Hampshire.    By the age of 16 he was working as a day laborer at his brother-in-law’s home in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Harry married Pauline Fielding, the daughter of Thomas and Mary A (Nedeau) Fielding in Kennebunk, Maine on October 28, 1903 and by 1910 they were raising two children and both working as shoe makers in Exeter, New Hampshire.

Harry Lumon Shackford WWI draft registration clipping

Harry’s September 9, 1918 draft registration seems to show a middle name of Luman (while the writing is decipher, assuming this is correct spelling as this is the middle name of one of the grandchildren).

By 1920, Harry had six children and was working as a fish dealer.  After the birth of his seventh child, Ernest Byron Shackford, he and his wife Pauline and his two daughters and their husbands who also had just had newborns all baptized their children together in one baptismal ceremony at the Methodist Episcopal Church!

Harry continued working in the fish business and purchased the fish business of E.C. Snowden on a wharf in Kennebunk in November 1829.  In the 1930 census he listed his occupation as a fish salesman and as a proprietor of a fish shop in the 1940 census.  Shackford & Gooch Marketing abt 1953We’re not sure when he and his son-in-law opened the famous Shackford & Gooch fish store but we do know it was a very well known and popular local and tourist spot in Kennebunk.

The Shackford’s also hosted many holiday and celebratory events with their eight children in their home in Biddeford and at Sebago Lake.  In  their later years they started to spend their winters in Saint Petersburg, Florida.

Harry died suddenly in Biddeford on July 7, 1953.  His obituary reads:
