Wedding Wednesday – Marriage Notices from the Maine Farmer 1833-1852 by Elizabeth Keene Young and Benjamin Lewis Keene (Blog 351)

IMG_4453.JPGThe Ellsworth Library has a fabulous collection of genealogy books which include Marriage Notices from the Maine Farmer 1833-1852 by Elizabeth Keene Young and Benjamin Lewis Keene.  We flipped the pages to the S section to see if the book contained Shackford records and found that the marriage of Samuel Shackford and Mary M Tinkham had appeared in the August 7, 1851 edition of the Maine Farmer.

This matches the information we have from the 1895 Album of Genealogy and Biography and the Maine Maine Marriages database from FamilySearch which lists Samuel and Marie’s marriage date as July 22, 1851.  While we love to look at all source material for Shackford families we research we probably won’t try to obtain a copy of the newspaper article as it does not seem to include a marriage date.  Also we’re hoping to get to see Samuel Shackford’s manuscript at the Winnetka Library and believe that might be the best source for information about his life.

Thanks to authors Elizabeth Young and Benjamin Keene for indexing the Maine Farmer. We recommend this book as a great tool for researching marriage notices in Maine between 1833 and 1852. Maybe you’ll discover that  your ancestor’s marriage notice appeared in the Maine Farmer!
